Gratitude with a smile

From our grateful grant recipients

H. Jackson Brown Jr.

“Remember that the happiest people are not those getting more, but those giving more.”

“The Stamford Family YMCA is profoundly grateful for the continual support we receive from the board of St. John’s Community Foundation. Your gift allows us to provide academic support, swim lessons, enrichment, and safety to children in kindergarten through 8th grade in LEAD Academy, our after-school program. We are especially grateful during these uncertain times when the youth we serve are the most vulnerable, are food insecure, experience disparities in access to technology, and have experienced multiple traumas due to the global pandemic.”

“Grant funding from St. John’s Community Foundation enabled Kids In Crisis to employ a TeenTalk counselor at the Academy of Information Technology and Engineering (AITE) to help students lead safe, healthy and productive lives. This year AITE provided confidential individual, group and family counseling – including 551 individual counseling sessions to students dealing with serious issues including: anxiety, depression, family conflict, academic challenges, peer issues and suicidal ideation – and actively collaborated with school staff and outside providers to ensure students’ health and safety. When COVID-19 hit and schools closed, TeenTalk services did not stop and proved critical to the many AITE students and caregivers who reached out for- and continued to receive- vital support via phone, text and remote visits. We cannot thank St. John’s Community Foundation enough for its continued partnership and commitment to keeping local children safe.”
“In 2012, when Over 60 Club, Inc. became independent from our long-term sponsor, we were blessed in not only finding space at St. John’s Episcopal Church but also in receiving a grant from St. John’s Community Foundation to help us continue our mission to assist Stamford seniors. The Club began in 1947 and has offered a place for socialization, a good meal, information, entertainment and much more ever since. Becoming independent was difficult but the Foundation assisted us in meeting our goals and to continue to help some of Stamford’s most underserved residents. We are very grateful to St. John’s Community Foundation for their help.”

Making a difference to those we serve

“Thank you for your grant to support the Domestic Violence Crisis Center’s legal services. It is your contribution which allows us to focus on what we do best: provide transformative services to adults and children who have been impacted by domestic violence and to bring relevant educational programs to the people in our community. Your generosity touches the lives of so many people, and we are forever grateful. We so appreciate the support of St. John’s Community Foundation – you have made such a difference to those we serve.”
“Access to the million-acre classroom of Long Island Sound cannot be exclusive. Support from the St. John’s Community Foundation for our Young Mariners program enables Sound Waters to offer middle school children from all backgrounds a summer outdoors on the Sound, a summer of sailing, science, new friendships and fun. In other words, the summer every child deserves. We are grateful and honored for this support.”

“There is no exercise better for the heart than reaching down and lifting people up.”

“The Boys & Girls Club of Stamford is a beacon of hope for so many youth and their families in our community. It is a lifeline that provides bright futures and opportunities to so many of our youth. With support from St. John’s Community Foundation, we can provide Project Learn services, which help to improve academic performance, thus helping close the achievement gap for our Club youth. By providing funding, St. John’s Community Foundation is a catalyst for enabling dreams and aspirations to come true for so many of our young members, and this directly translates into a thriving, growing, and prosperous Stamford for all.”

"Person to Person greatly appreciates the Foundation’s ongoing support for our Emergency Assistance Program. Your support is deeply appreciated and will make a difference in the lives of families in crisis in our communities. This support will go a long way towards helping fight the substantial increase in food insecurity that the COVID 19 pandemic has brought in our community. Your support for the work we do helps families put food on the table, keep the lights on and remain in their homes without fear of eviction as they work towards self-sufficiency. We are so grateful for your support during this very difficult time for thousands of area residents. Thank you!”
“Family ReEntry is deeply grateful for the recent donation from the St. John’s Community Foundation to support our critical Domestic Violence Intervention programs. This gift of funding supports our ability to provide direct services to reduce and eradicate intimate partner and domestic violence throughout Fairfield County. Family ReEntry recognizes that the intervention work we offer could not be accomplished without the commitment and generous support from donors such as you. Thank you!”

Test prep/counseling for economically disadvantaged students

"The mission of the Gaffney Foundation is to provide motivated, economically disadvantaged students an opportunity to have a successful college experience and productive career. The largest component of the assistance given to Gaffney students is SAT/ACT test prep/counseling. The St. John’s Community Foundation grant helped fund a significant portion of this program. COVID-19 prevented us from in-person contact with our students and making college visits. However, we have continued one-on-one interaction with all the students online via Facetime and Zoom as well as taking them on ‘virtual’ college trips. Also, since the March SAT was cancelled, we have to spend additional time in the fall to prepare/review for the re-scheduled tests.”
“The Exchange Club Parenting Skills Center would like to thank St. John’s Community Foundation for your generous grant. The funds will be used for the operation of Help for Kids program. With this grant we are able to provide the children in our community with services that save them from harm. The majority of child maltreatment cases are neglected due to poverty, addiction issues, mental health, lack of access to community support, knowledge of child development or lack of parenting skills. Neglect is preventable, with help from our programs and our knowledgeable staff; families can alter their outcome and thrive. Truthfully, St. John’s Community Foundation, we could not do this without you. We and those we serve, sincerely appreciate your generosity.”

“A kind gesture can reach a wound that only compassion can heal.”

“We would like to thank St. John’s Community Foundation for your generous grant in support of River House’s ‘Low-Income, Elderly Stamford Resident Program’. By offering daytime care six days a week, River House helps ease the burden of caregiving on families while providing aging adults with comfort and joy. Our members say that if it weren’t for River House they would be isolated at home or disconnected from their family at a nursing home. On behalf of our members, staff and Board of Directors, we thank you for your support of our work.”

“On behalf of Women’s Mentoring Network and the women and families that we work with every day, thank you to St. John’s Community Foundation for the very generous donation to support our E to the 4th POWER program. The support provided will make a big difference in the lives of families in our community, especially as they are facing financial uncertainty during this unprecedented and extraordinarily difficult time. Our organization provides services to women and families in educating them on the resources available to help them get through this COVID-19 epidemic, including applying for unemployment and food sources available. Women’s Mentoring Network has been assisting our clients to focus on what they can be working on during this time in order to be prepared for when everything opens up again. Please know that the donation provided is greatly appreciated by all.”
“We have received a generous grant from the St. John’s Community Foundation, and are sincerely grateful for this support. Your thoughtfulness will directly benefit economically distressed families with a premature baby. With the onset of COVID-19, the need has grown considerably. Please be assured that the generosity of the St. John’s Community Foundation is having a most significant impact upon our neighbors in need.”

Assisting college alums with housing

“Because of the grant provided by St. John’s Community Foundation, Alum 5 members are able to live affordably in Stamford. Many of our alums or college students completely support themselves but do not have the family network or financial wherewithal to find affordable housing in Stamford. Without St. John’s Community Foundation’s assistance, these young people would not be able to hold jobs and remain in the Stamford community. Thank you so much, we are truly grateful.”

Anne Frank

“No one has ever become poor by giving.”
