Detail of Christ in Transfiguration window by Louis Comfort Tiffany, 1901
This closeup detail of the figure of Christ in St. John's Transfiguration window shows the artistry of the Tiffany window. Tiffany believed that the colors of the glass should tell the story, without having the details painted on the glass. Only hands and faces were painted in a Tiffany window; the rest of the details were made by the glass itself.
In this window, you can see the folds of Christ's garment made by the texture of the glass. The colors in the clouds above His head are made by the different mixes of colored glass without the help of paint on the glass. What does not show in this picture is the golden glow in the aura surrounding Christ's figure. When the light is just right coming through the window, the edge is a shimmering gold.
The window is located above the main altar in the chancel. It was designed by Frederick Wilson who was one of Tiffany's main designers of Tiffany's figural windows from this period.
